Feldman also includes some excellent material on the scientific and philosophical and historical context, looking at such things as the difference between popular and scientific understandings of “chaos”, the historical relationship of dynamics to ideas of causality and the Scientific Revolution, the difficulty of giving a single definition of “fractal”, the difference between mathematical and real fractals, and so forth.

Fractals are geometric shapes that include complicated spurs, peaks and other irregularities that one does not see in the neat lines, angles and arcs of Euclidian geometry.
Peitgen left the directorship of the institute inafter he retired from the University of Bremen. I didn’t read the entire book word-for-word. On January 1,Dr. This second edition has several changes. New Frontiers of Science makes an excellent entry to the broader mathematics of fractals and peeitgen, especially for students who are curious about the details as well as the core concepts but don’t want to get bogged down in formal mathematics.
The assumed knowledge is greater than Feldman, and the target audience might be early undergraduates studying mathematics or the computational and physical sciences.

But it also includes at least an introduction to ergodicity and statistical stability, normal distributions and the central limit theorem, power laws and long tails, different kinds of dimension, countable and uncountable infinities, complex numbers, cellular automata, basic calculus and differential equations!

Jan 27, Charles Frode rated it it was amazing. This was my peeitgen introduction to the theory of chaos and non linear dynamics. It is designed either as “a college course for students who are not maths or science majors and have not necessarily taken calculus” or as a mathematics course for high school students, taught instead of or as a precursor to calculus.

This book was followed up in by The Science of Fractal Images and in by a large and authoritative volume entitled Chaos and Fractals: My results are here: Almost 12 years have passed by since we wrote Chaos and Fractals. There is a little background history and philosophy, notably in a preface by Feigenbaum and an introduction, and occasional discussion of applications, such as using the Hilbert curve for dithering, but New Frontiers of Science remains focused on the mathematics.

Each chapter is closed by a “Program of the Chapter” which provides computer code for a central experiment. Diana Mecum rated it it was amazing Sep 23, At the time of the first edition Yuval Fishers contribution, which we published as an appendix was probably the first complete expository account on fractal image compression. After receiving his habilitation inhe first taught as private docent in Bonn before obtaining a professorship for mathematics at the University of Bremen.

For anyone after more rigorous mathematics I recommend Falconer’s Fractal Geometry: His research work emphasises dynamical systems, numerical analysis, image analysis, and data analysis, as well as the use of computers in image-based medical diagnostics. Every book that is somewhat technical in nature is likely to have a number of misprints and errors in its first edition. Some of these were caught and brought to our attention by our readers.
Currently, while retired from the University of Bremen, he is a professor emeritus at Florida Atlantic University.
